FoursquareX is a software application designed by developer Eric Butler specifically for Mac users, allowing them to stay updated with their foursquare friends' whereabouts. Currently compatible with Snow Leopard only, FoursquareX utilizes the CoreLocation API and Wi-Fi networks to determine your location without requiring a GPS function in your Mac.
Once installed, FoursquareX simplifies the process by enabling you to check into various locations and receive Growl updates as friends do so or share shouts. The app also integrates with Facebook and Twitter for easy posting of your location and thoughts to these social networks.
Although mobile apps may currently offer more features, FoursquareX is designed with the understanding that this platform isn't intended for stationary usage. Despite these limitations, some drawbacks of FoursquareX stem from its parent application: foursquare's limited popularity outside major US cities may render it less useful in other regions. Furthermore, the ability to check into any location regardless of your actual position might seem counterintuitive.
Nevertheless, FoursquareX is a stable and user-friendly application even in its early stages of development. It caters to those who wish to remain engaged with foursquare, regardless of whether they have their phone on hand or not.
